Trailer Watch: “Hatching” Is a Twisted Coming-of-Age Story About a Young Gymnast and an Egg

Overwhelmed by the demands of her image-obsessed mother, a 12-year old girl channels the motherly love she’s not receiving into nurturing a strange egg she discovers in the woods in “Hatching.” A trailer for Hanna Bergholm’s Sundance pic introduces us to Tinja (Siiri Solalinna), a competitive gymnast, and her mother, a blogger consumed with projecting an idealized version of her family to her followers.

“I’ll take care of you,” Tinja promises the egg — and the creature that later emerges from it. Her own mother is less preoccupied with taking care of Tinja than ensuring that she conforms to her expectations. She’s so disconnected that she doesn’t seem to notice her daughter’s terrifying new best friend.

Bergholm described “Hatching” as a “twisted coming-of-age drama mixed with elevated body horror” in a soon-to-be published interview with us. Asked what she’d like people to think about after seeing the film, she said, “We all want to be seen and loved fully and unconditionally [as our imperfect selves], with all our scars.”

Sundance runs from January 20-30 and is digital for the second year in a row due to COVID-19.

“Hatching” hits theaters and digital/ VOD April 29.
