Dinner Diaries: The Marlou – Press Pass LA

Downtown LA has been throwing down with the amount of incredible restuarants popping up, and The Marlou is the latest gem to settle into the culinary downtown scene.

The Marlou is run by Chef Marcos Spaziani, who you may know from his stint on Bravo’s Below Deck Sailing Yacht and Chef Louis Huh. Chef Marcos and Chef Louis have combined their diverse cultural backgrounds, which in turn, has created some very unique dishes featured at The Marlou. Before The Marlou both chefs were partners at the popular ML Eats food truck here in LA.

We kicked off our experience with their cucumber carpaccio, which as you can see comes with a poached lobster, paired with a light mango salsa and a lovely gazpacho foam. The flavor combination was light and allowed for each distince flavor to shine though. The lobster was poached to perfection and really brought out the glavors of the mango and cucumber.

We saw truffle on the menu and of course came to full stop like any sane person. It was divine. This is the Porcini e Truffle off of their menu. The mushroom and truffle combination is a slam dunk. Every bite felt like we were on an adveture in Italian flavor sensations. A must try when visiting The Marlou, do not miss out.

We love Paella and we love Kimchi, which is why the menu’s Kimchi Seafood Paella is a combination we’d never seen before, but had to try. Intrigued and excited we knew this combination couldn’t be overlooked. The flavors are so fun, you get the full experience of Paella but the dish transforms and truly becomes it’s own as the fusion of Kimchi brings out a different flavor profile in both the rice and the seafood. Hybrid dishes between two foodie cultures can be hit or miss, but if you love kimchi and seafood this dish was made for you.

For those who prefer the classics, you’ll enjoy The Marlou’s Tuna TarTar. We did ask for more of the crisps as the dish only comes with three, and while it makes for a pretty dish presentation the small amount doesn’t add up to finish the dish. You can ask your server for extra crispy wontons, but maybe ask up front so you aren’t left waiting while drooling over the quality of the tuna. Crisp shortage aside, the tuna is incredible fresh and the flavors melt in your mouth. It’s both a light and airy dish that can be a starter, or a light dinner that will see you through the evening, depending on how hungry you find yourself.

Oh dessert, we could write you a love letter any day of the week. We opted for The Marlou’s classic coffee martini for dessert alongside their Chocolate Brioche Bread Pudding. Both of these choices were delectable and the bread pudding really knocks it out of the park in how rich and delicious it is. for presentation however, we have to give The Marlou’s apple shaped ice cream a 10/10 for its incredible presentation and flavor. This apple shaped ice cream like dessert is nestled in a bed of pastry flakes but served in a glass lid that is lifted off as smoke encapsulating the dessert floats away. A real show-stopper this dessert is fantastic. Get their Torched Alaska on its own, or at happy hour. No need to wait to finish your dinner courses for this beauty.
